The correlation between triglyceride glucose index and osteoporosis: a cross-sectional study based on natural populations

  • Objective To investigate the correlation between triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and osteoporosis based on a large natural population cohort in the Yangzhou area.
Methods  Retrospective analysis of data from a natural population cohort at the Health Management Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University, dual-energy x-ray assay (DXA) was applied for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. They were divided into osteoporosis and healthy control groups, and the correlation between TyG index and osteoporosis was analyzed.
Results  A total of 8 173 patients were selected, including 789 (9.65%) in the osteoporosis group and 7 384 cases(90.35%) in the non-osteoporosis group. There were significant differences in gender, age, smoking and alcohol history, prevalence of underlying diseases (hypertension, diabetes, fatty liver), body mass index(BMI), systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and TyG index between the two groups (P < 0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis based on gender, age, smoking, alcohol consumption, combined underlying diseases showed that TyG index had good predictive efficacy for osteoporosis conditions in subgroups of women, age ≥ 60 years old, age < 60 years old, no smoking history, no drinking history, no hypertension, no diabetes, no diabetes, no fatty liver.
Conclusion  TyG index is an independent risk factor for osteoporosis and can be used as an objective and convenient clinical index for differential diagnosis of osteoporosis.
