Application of self-adhesive elastic bandage in wound dressing for external ventricular drainage

  • Objective  To observe the application effect of self-adhesive elastic bandage in dressing wound of external ventricular drainage.
Methods  A total of 63 patients with external ventricular drainage for cerebral hemorrhage from April 2020 to June 2022 were included, and were divided into observation and control groups according to the random number table method. In the control group, 30 patients used ordinary bandage for wound dressing; 33 patients in the observation group used self-adhesive elastic bandage for wound dressing, and the incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage, drain folding rate, total cost for dressing change and assistance rate of dressing change of both groups were observed.
Results  In the control group, cerebrospinal fluid leakage occurred in 4 cases (13.3%), drainage tube folding in 6 cases (20.0%), and requiring assistance for dressing change in 27 cases (90.0%). In the observation group, drainage tube folding occurred in 1 case (3.0%), and requiring assistance for dressing change in 10 cases (30.3%). The total cost of dressing change in the observation group was (197.63±28.58) yuan RMB, which was less than (280.93±24.01) yuan RMB in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05).
Conclusion  The use of self-adhesive elastic bandage for wound dressing after external cerebral ventricular drainage can reduce the incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage, the folding rate of drainage tube, the dressing change assistance rate and the total cost of patient dressing change, and provide clinical basis for the wound dressing of external cerebral ventricular drainage.
