Status of knowledge, belief and behavior of patients with breast cancer implanted infusion port in the arm: a qualitative study

  • Objective To explore status of knowledge, belief and behavior of patients with breast cancer implanted infusion port in the arm and their nursing needs.
    Methods From January to March 2021, purposive sampling was used to select ten breast cancer patients who underwent arm infusion port implantation in the Department of Thyroid Gland and Mammary Gland Surgery of Taizhou People′s Hospital as research objects. Guided by the phenomenological method in qualitative research, in-depth interviews were conducted for chemotherapy patients implanted infusion port in arm before catheterization and one day before the second chemotherapy, and the text data of the interviews were sorted and analyzed to summarize the current situation of patients′ knowledge, belief and behavior and put forward countermeasures.
    Results The current situations of knowledge, attitude and behavior of breast cancer patients implanted with arm infusion port included lack of knowledge about infusion port, vague choice of venous access, great economic pressure, worries of home maintenance and affected daily activities.
    Conclusion Breast cancer patients implanted with arm infusion port have confusion and needs in cognition, attitude, behavior, etc. Nursing staff need to fully understand patients′needs, strengthen health education to improve cognitive level, strengthen information transmission to change the attitude of patients, optimize the service process to change the behavior of patients, thereby improving the knowledge, attitude and behavior level of patients, improving the satisfaction of nursing services, and promoting the promotion and application of arm infusion port.
