Effect of vitamin E combined with metformin in infertility patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

  • Objective  To investigate the effect of vitamin E combined with metformin in infertility patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
    Methods  A total of 120 PCOS infertile patients were selected as research objects, and randomly divided into control group (60 cases) and combined group (60 cases). Both groups received basic treatment, the control group was additionally treated with metformin, and the combined group was additionally treated with vitamin E. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), sex hormone, oxidative stress level, endometrial thickness and ovarian volume were observed before and after treatment in two groups. The total effective rate, ovulation rate and pregnancy rate were compared between the two groups.
    Results  After treatment, IGF-1, MCP-1, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), LH/FSH and testosterone (T) in two groups were significantly lower than before treatment, and those in the combined group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant state (TAS) in the combined group were significantly higher than those in the control group, and serum total oxidation state (TOS) in the combined group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Endometrial thickness was thicker, and ovarian volume in the combined group was significantly smaller than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The total effective rate in the combined group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Ovulation rate in the combined group was 80.00%, which was significantly higher than 50.00% in the control group (P < 0.05). The pregnancy rate in the combined group was 50.00%, which was significantly higher than 13.33% in the control group (P < 0.05).
    Conclusion  Vitamin E combined with metformin has a good effect in infertility patients with PCOS, which can reduce the levels of IGF-1 and MCP-1, improve the levels of sex hormones and oxidative stress, and promote the recovery of patients.
