Effect of optimizing gastric lavage processes in emergency treatment of patients with acute poisoning during outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019

  •   Objective  To observe the effect of optimizing gastric lavage processes in the emergency treatment of patients with acute poisoning during the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Methods  This study was designed to summarize the experience of emergency treatment during outbreak of COVID-19 and improve the processes of emergency treatment for patients with acute poisoning by gastric lavage. Rescue efficiency and patient's satisfaction degree were compared between periods before optimization (from February to July 2020) and after optimization (from August 2020 to March 2021).
Results  After optimizing the gastric lavage processes, the time from reception to gastric lavage was shortened significantly, the success rate of the first catheterization was increased significantly, the incidence of gastric lavage related complications was significantly decreased, and the nursing satisfaction degree of patients was improved (P < 0.05).
Conclusion  The optimized emergency nursing processes can not only meet the needs of epidemic prevention and control, but also can effectively improve the treatment efficiency and satisfaction degree of gastric lavage for patients with acute poisoning.
