Extended nursing service for patients with type 2 diabetes in communities

  • Objective To observe the extended nursing service and its effect in control of blood glucose for rural patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods A total of 300 patients with type 2 diabetes were selected and were divided into control group(n=150)and observation group(n=150)according to odd and even registration number on admission. The former group received routine nursing service, while the latter group received extended nursing service on the basis of the routine nursing. Their fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose at 2 h, glycosylated hemoglobin and self-management behaviors were measured at 6 months post-discharge. Results The observation group had significantly lower levels of fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose at 2 h as well as glycosylated hemoglobin, and better self-management ability than the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion The extended nursing service in rural areas is beneficial to improving the patient's self-management ability, promoting recovery, and controlling blood glucose.
