Study on effect of thyroidectomy by exposing the upper pole of thyroid via cervical strap muscles approach

  •   Objective  To explore effect of thyroidectomy by exposing the upper pole of thyroid via cricothyroid muscle approach versus the cervical strap muscle approach.
Methods  A total of 42 patients with thyroid diseases who need surgeries were selected as research objects. According to different surgical approaches, they were divided into cervical strap muscle approach group (n=20) and cricothyroid muscle approach group (n=22). The degree of exposure of upper pole of thyroid gland, exposure rate of the superior laryngeal nerve, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and occurrence of postoperative complications in the two groups were compared.
Results  The exposure degree of the upper thyroid pole and exposure rate of the superior laryngeal nerve in the cervical strap muscle approach group were better than those cricothyroid muscle approach group(P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and complications between the two groups (P>0.05).
Conclusion  Compared with thyroidectomy via the cricothyroid approach, thyroidectomy via the cervical strap muscle approach has a better exposure effect on the upper thyroid pole, a higher exposure rate of the superior laryngeal nerve, and has less postoperative complications.
