Effect of oral oxygen-blowing method in prevention of oral ulcer after high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy in patients with osteosarcoma

  •   Objective  To observe the effect of oral oxygen-blowing therapy in prevention of oral ulcer after high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy in patients with osteosarcoma.
Methods  Fifty-two osteosarcoma patients who received intravenous chemotherapy were selected, and were divided into control group (n=26) and observation group (n=26) by random number table method. The control group was treated with calcium folinate gargle during chemotherapy, and the observation group was given 24-hour intermittent oral oxygen blowing at the beginning of the chemotherapy. The incidence of oral ulcer, grading of oral ulcer degree after 7 d after chemotherapy, comfort and compliance during treatment were observed and compared between the two groups.
Results  There were 5 cases with grading Ⅰoral ulcer, 4 cases with gradingⅡ, and 2 cases with grading Ⅲ in the control group. Only 2 cases with grading Ⅰoral ulcer occurred in the observation group. The incidence of total oral ulcer was 42.31% in the control group and 7.69% in the observation group, which showed a significant between-group difference(P < 0.05). The comfort rate and compliance rate in the observation group were 84.62% and 96.15%, respectively, which were significantly higher than 38.46% and 57.69%, respectively in the control group(P < 0.05).
Conclusion  The oral oxygen blowing therapy can reduce the occurrence of oral ulcer in the patients with osteosarcoma after chemotherapy, relieve the degree of oral ulcers and pain, and has higher comfort and compliance.
