Research progress on relationships of ABO blood types with venous thromboembolism

  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common clinical disease and the third major diseases of cardiovascular system. If deep venous thrombosis is secondary to pulmonary embolism, it will lead to a significant increase in mortality. If the nonstandard treatment is performed, deep venous thrombosis may develop into post-thrombotic syndrome. ABO blood types are closely related to VTE and its prognosis, individuals with non-O blood type seem to be more prone to occur VTE and worse prognosis, but the characteristics of the sample population in relevant studies vary greatly and the conclusions are different. This study reviewed the latest domestic and foreign literatures on the correlations of ABO blood types with VTE as well as its prognosis, and it is concluded that when treating VTE patients, blood group should be integrated into the factors affecting the curative effect, so as to provide more individualized VTE prevention and treatment schemes for patients with different blood types.
