Effect of group therapy in treatment of mental disorders patients with metabolic syndrome

  •   Objective  To investigate the influence of group therapy on mental disorders patients with metabolic syndrome (MS).
Methods  Totally 62 mental disorders patients with MS were selected and randomly divided into control group and observation group, with 31 cases in each group. The control group was treated with routine therapy and health education, and the observation group was treated with group therapy on the basis of the control group. The body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) in both groups were observed before intervention and 8 weeks after intervention, and the compliance of medication, diet control and physical exercise were compared between the two groups.
Results  After the intervention, BMI, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure of the observation group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05), FBG and HOMA-IR levels of the observation group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05), TG, TC and LDL-C levels of the observation group were significantly lower than those of the control group, while HDL-C level of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The compliance rates of medication, diet control and physical exercise in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05).
Conclusion  Implementation of group therapy for mental disorders patients with MS is helpful to improve the medication compliance and establish a healthy way of life.
