Effect of proximal femoral nail antirotation and Chinese medicine in combination in the treatment of elderly patients with femoral intertrochanteric fractures

  •   Objective  To observe the clinical effect of proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) combined with Chinese medicine in the treatment of femoral intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly.
Methods  Ninety-six with femoral intertrochanteric fractures enrolled in the study were randomly divided into combined group(n=48), given PFNA combined with Chinese medicine, and control group(n=48) given PFNA treatment. The subsided time of swollen limb affected, fracture healing time, Harris scores for hip function at 3, 6 months after surgery were observed and compared.
Results  Compared with the control group, the combined group had shorter swelling time, hospital stay after surgery and fracture healing time, and higher Harris scores at 3- and 6-month after surgery(P < 0.01). The excellent rate of hip joint function at at 3- and 6-month after surgery was higher than that of the control group(P < 0.05).
Conclusion  Chinese medicine and PFNA in combination can relieve swelling, shorten fracture healing time and improve hip joint function.
